So, you fancy yourself a startup entrepreneur, huh? Or maybe you’re just someone who wants to flash that “startup” badge at family gatherings to make Aunt Susan finally stop asking when you’re getting a real job. Look, there’s a whole parade of wannabe entrepreneurs out there – you know, the ones who drool over the glamor, the bling, the idea of strutting onto Shark Tank like they’ve already made it. News flash: if your biggest aspiration is to get a golden ticket to the Shark Tank circus, you’re in for a rude awakening. The real startup world? It’s not about the glitz, my friend. So, let’s cut to the chase: Are you the real deal, or just another wantrepreneur living in la-la land?

Here’s how to tell if you’re the latter:

  1. Fake it, and don’t even worry about the make-it part: Why bother actually delivering when you can just keep pretending you’re on the brink of greatness? Reality is overrated anyway.
  2. Users are as good as paying customers: Who needs revenue when you’ve got users? I mean, likes and follows totally pay the bills, right?
  3. Press Coverage trumps Revenue: If you can’t impress investors with your cash flow, just hit them with your latest feature in TechCrunch. Because nothing says “sustainable business” like a fleeting headline.
  4. When in doubt, pivot: Can’t figure out your business model? Just pivot, baby! It’s the startup world’s favorite way of saying, “I have no idea what I’m doing.”
  5. Don’t confuse your story with the facts: Facts are for accountants. Stick to your story – the more grandiose, the better. Who cares if it’s true?
  6. If you can’t impress them with your value proposition, impress them with outrageous behavior: Loud, obnoxious, and controversial? That’ll get you noticed! Just don’t expect it to get you funded.
  7. Never put off a party for work you must do today: Work can wait. There’s always a networking event with free booze that’s way more important than actually, you know, working.
  8. Shiny objects are made to be followed… so follow them: Distraction is the name of the game. If it’s new and flashy, chase it down like it’s the last unicorn on Earth.
  9. Focus is the enemy of a person who wants to be held accountable for succeeding at something, so do everything: Why master one thing when you can dabble in ten and succeed at none? After all, who needs focus when you can just keep moving the goalposts?
  10. Everything you ever needed to know, you learned in school… stop learning: You’ve got that fancy degree, so you’re done, right? No need to keep learning when you’ve already peaked at graduation.

So, do you recognize yourself in any of these commandments? If so, congrats – you’ve officially entered the wantrepreneur zone. But hey, if you’re ready to leave the land of make-believe and start building something real, let’s chat.
